Roger Federer ends barren spell to beat Rafael Nadal to Madrid title

Roger Federer was delighted after taking his first title in eight months and inflicting Rafael Nadal's first defeat on clay in 34 matches.

The world No2 was without a tournament success since winning in Basle but that barren spell came to an end as he stunned the home favourite 6-4, 6-4 in one hour and 26 minutes at the Madrid Masters.

"I served well, mixed it up well and took all the right decisions today," said Federer.

"In the end it looked quite comfortable out there for me, so it was a perfect win for me. I'm very satisfied.

"I've had some bad losses this year in terms of the way I've played but I've felt this win has been coming for a few weeks so I am very pleased with the result."

Nadal insisted his marathon semifinal against Novak Djokovic had not affected his performance.

"Playing four hours was not a problem for the final," he said. "Roger deserved to win."

The game's top woman, Dinara Safina, clinched her second title this year by seeing off Denmark's world No9, Caroline Wozniacki 6-2, 6-4.

The Russian, following on from her success in Rome last week, said: "I got a little bit tired by the end of the match but even at the crucial moments I was dominant."
