Son to referee Wembley final day after dad

18.05.09

Michael Oliver will referee the play-off final between Millwall and Scunthorpe 24 hours after his father, Clive, takes charge of the climax to the League Two season.

Millwall fans will be hoping that is a lucky omen as Clive, 46, refereed their 1-0 first leg semi-final victory over Leeds. On Saturday Clive will be at Wembley when Gillingham play Shrewsbury while his son prepares for the League One clash.

Michael, 24, became the youngest official to referee at the national stadium when he oversaw the 2007 Conference play-off final between Morecame and Exeter.

He did not shirk the big decisions that day, becoming the first referee to give a penalty at the new Wembley and the first to send a player off there, dismissing Exeter's Matt Gill for headbutting an opponent.
