Down and out: Danny Cipriani has been cast aside by England’s Martin Johnson

Agony for Danny Cipriani as he is dumped by Martin Johnson

Wasps fly-half Danny Cipriani suffered a massive blow today when he was left out of England's squad for the summer Test series against Argentina.

Leicester's in-form fly-half Sam Vesty is one of six uncapped players called up by team manager Martin Johnson, with Cipriani having to contend himself with a place in the second-string Saxons squad.

Johnson said: "Sam has been playing very well and deserves his place in the senior team.

"It is not that Danny doesn't but someone has beaten him to the spot. It is a very competitive area and we made the call after thinking about who was right for this trip."

There was also a surprise recall for 2003 World Cup-winning hooker Steve Thompson.

England play the Barbarians at Twickenham on 30 May before facing the Pumas home and away, at Old Trafford on 6 June and in Salta a week later. England's 34-man squad will be captained by Steve Borthwick and also sees a return for Lewis Moody after an injury-plagued season.

The uncapped six include Newcastle prop David Wilson and Tom May, who has been playing at fly-half for the Falcons, Harlequins pair Chris Robshaw and Jordan Turner-Hall plus Gloucester prop Nick Wood.

Johnson said: "This is a very strong squad full of a mixture of experience and young talent.

"I'm sure that any of the uncapped players will take the step up from the Saxons to the senior Test arena."
