Chelsea hope Ashley Cole will sign new long-term deal at Stamford Bridge

Chelsea are determined to tie Ashley Cole to a long-term contract and are confident he will commit his long-term future to the club this summer.

Cole has only two years left of his current deal left to run and is already beginning to generate interest from Manchester City and Barcelona.

But Chelsea, who have yet to confirm who their permanent manager will be next season, are already working on new deals for some of their stars.

Cole, 28, has enjoyed his best season since moving to Stamford Bridge from Arsenal in 2006 and has won over all the fans. He is expected to run Frank Lampard close in the club's Player of the Season Award, which is voted for by the supporters, when it is announced tomorrow night.

Chelsea also have no other genuine left back at the club after allowing Wayne Bridge to move to Manchester City in January.

They hope an offer of a five-year deal with a pay-rise from £80,000-a-week to just over £100,000-a-week will be sufficient to keep a player who has already admitted he wants to experience more success at Stamford Bridge.

Last month he said: "Since I've been here I've had a great time and won a lot of trophies, but I want to win a lot more in the future with Chelsea."

Joe Cole is also set to be offered a new deal, but the future of striker Didier Drogba remains in doubt.

Meanwhile, current manager Guus Hiddink has admitted he will find it hard to be involved in any World Cup bid for 2018.

Hiddink, who will return to his job as Russia coach at the end of the month, has been asked by the Russian Football Association to lead their campaign to host the 2018 or 2022 World Cup finals.

The 62-year-old is already torn because Russia are competing against England and the country of his birth Holland, who want to co-host with Belgium.

He has great respect and loyalty to all the nations and said: "I don't know what I'll do. I will have to be split in three."
