Middlesex's fall from grace gathers pace

28 May 2009

Reigning champions Middlesex are still searching for their first Twenty20 Cup win of the year after suffering a 62-run defeat by Kent.

In a replay of last year's final, and under the new retractable floodlights at Lord's, Martin van Jaarsveld's unbeaten 75 off 36 balls formed the cornerstone of Kent's 191 for three. The target proved well beyond Middlesex, who could muster only 129 for eight in reply.

Sussex, meanwhile, are to rest England wicketkeeper Matt Prior from the Twenty20 competition to allow his injured finger time to recover. Prior suffered bruising during the Second Test against the West Indies but played in the one-day internationals.

He is to return to action in the County Championship game against Yorkshire at Headingley which starts on 6 June.

Today's fixtures: Lancs v Notts (Old Trafford, 5.30pm), Leics v Derbys (Grace Rd, 5.30pm), Sussex v Essex (Hove, 7.10pm)
