Dylan Hartley keeps out hero Steve Thompson

Steve Thompson must settle for a place on the England replacements' bench on Saturday after Dylan Hartley was named as hooker against Argentina.

The 2003 World Cup winner has not earned a cap in three years after a neck injury in 2007 almost ended his career.

Thompson hoped his 20‑minute appearance against the Barbarians could see him start the First Test but team manager Martin Johnson has kept faith with Northampton's Hartley, who was in the XV at Twickenham last week.

Johnson has also decided to give Test debuts to Matt Banahan, David Wilson and Tom May.

Bath winger Banahan and Newcastle prop Wilson both impressed in the defeat to the Barbarians while Toulon-bound utility back May will be at inside centre at Old Trafford.

The Armitage brothers are reunited in an England side for the second time with Delon at full‑back and Steffon, who won his first cap against Italy this year, at openside flanker.

England: D Armitage (L Irish),
M Cueto (Sale), D Hipkiss (Leics), T May (Newc), M Banahan (Bath); A Goode (Brive), D Care (Quins);
T Payne (Wasps), D Hartley (N'hampton), D Wilson (Newc), S Borthwick (Saracens, capt), L Deacon (Leics), J Haskell (Wasps), S Armitage (L Irish), N Easter (Quins). Reps: S Thompson (Brive), J White, B Kay, J Crane, S Vesty (all Leics), P Hodgson (L Irish) M Tait (Sale).
