Gordon D’Arcy gets the call as fears grow over Riki Flutey

Riki Flutey is in danger of becoming the latest Lions player to be ruled out of the tour after serious concerns over his knee injury today forced the management to call up Gordon D'Arcy from holiday in America.

The England centre damaged his knee after being on the pitch for 12 minutes as a replacement in the opening tour match victory over the Royal XV on Saturday.

Scans of the injury have been assessed by the Lions medical team who watched Flutey during a swimming pool session today and will decide within three to four days whether his tour is over.

Ireland's D'Arcy helped the Barbarians defeat England at Twickenham on Saturday and then went on holiday to San Francisco but will arrive in South Africa to link up with the squad tomorrow.

The Lions management also have injury concerns over Ireland utility back Luke Fitzgerald, who could not be considered for tonight's game against the Golden Lions because of a knee injury and also a stomach complaint.

And there is more concern over Brian O'Driscoll's shoulder injury. Although he is fit enough to lead the Lions tonight there is a danger his problem could become worse.

If Flutey goes home he will join a long list of injury setbacks for the Lions who had to replace Tomas O'Leary and Tom Shanklin before the tour started. They also saw flanker Alan Quinlan ruled out because of a ban for foul play.

Leigh Halfpenny has now joined the party after the Cardiff wing completed two weeks' recovery work on a thigh injury.

The New Zealand-born Flutey, who has quit London Wasps for Brive, was set to play a key midfield role after an impressive first season with England after qualifying on residency grounds.
