Golden Lions 10 - 74 Lions

Stephen Jones guided the tourists to a stunning 10-try demolition of the Golden Lions and then demanded an even better performance from the squad against the Cheetahs on Saturday. Although the Wales fly-half will not start that match - Ronan O'Gara is expected to play at No10 in Bloemfontein- he believes the Lions must keep raising the bar to give themselves a realistic chance of defeating South Africa in the three-Test series.

After a stuttering opening win against a Royal XV in the heat of Phokeng, the Lions put out a very different team last night, containing up to nine of the potential First Test line-up. And they enjoyed the cool evening and two tries each from Jamie Roberts, Ugo Monye and Tommy Bowe gave a doubting South African rugby public something to think about.

Jones, who kicked 18 points, said: "We had a few comments in the build-up to this match from local fans telling us we would come second best and it will be interesting to find out how they perceive us after that performance. You have to earn your rugby stripes in this country and hopefully we did that in this game. It's now about raising the bar again and become even better. Yes, this win was beyond my wildest dreams but there are areas where we have to improve."

The Welshman (below) had an effective partnership with compatriots Mike Phillips, at scrum-half, and Roberts, at inside centre, and along with the unique skills of captain Brian O'Driscoll were too much for the hosts at Ellis Park.

"Brian and I were talking throughout the match and he tells me who is tackling him and that gives me an idea of what moves could work to avoid that kind of defence," said Jones. "Our own defence is a work in progress and there are areas we will have to work on and this part of our game has to evolve as we build up to the Test matches."

Despite registering the second highest score by a Lions team in South Africa - the 1974 side beat South West Districts 97-0 - most Springbok fans will view the result as flawed due to the short comings of the opposition.

O'Driscoll is well aware of this but hopes the fact the Golden Lions play in the much lauded Super 14 competition will be acknowledged by critics. He said: "To score 70 points against a Super 14 side - somebody must have taken note of that and it's a fact that we are far from the finished article."

Ian McGeechan, the Lions head coach, will agree and a better side would have punished obvious flaws in the defensive system that Shaun Edwards is employing. It resembles the way Edwards's London Wasps defend with the outside centre closing the gap on the opposition ahead of his midfield partners forcing the opponent to either turn inside - where the cover is waiting - or to take a chance with a long floated pass over O'Driscoll.

After just two games, the system is still a work in progress for those players not used to it and with Edwards also working as the Wales defence coach, it is understandable that Jones, Phillips and Roberts are heavily involved.

The Lions were more clinical in every facet of play, retained the ball for longer, finished off the majority of try scoring chances and dominated the break down for long periods.

By the time they take on the world champions, they have to be even more ruthless and this win was a significant step towards that goal.

As Jones said, though, the Lions now have to repeat the feat against the Cheetahs.

Last night's performance proves yet again what a canny coach McGeechan is, particularly in picking BOD as captain who then laid down a challenge to O Connell to lead similarly or better next Sat. The Welsh-Irish units and combinations are starting to work which, along with some excellent individual performances from the English and Scottish players led to a more than a sum of the parts overall performance. Very encouraging play.
O Driscoll's slight loss of pace is irrelevant when he carries stardust in his pockets and sprinkles it round his team mates.
