Legend: Mike Catt could become only the third player to play for and against the Lions

Mike Catt offered a chance to face old Lions comrades

Mike Catt could become only third player to play with and against the Lions after being chosen by the Southern Kings to face the tourists in his home town of Port Elizabeth on 16 June.

Alan Solomons, the former Saracens coach, has nominated a starting XV that includes the London Irish player/coach, who is in Australia with the Barbarians having helped them defeat England at Twickenham last week.

Now, Catt is being tempted to return "home" for what would be a special moment in the career of the England 2003 World Cup winner who was part of the 1997 Lions in South Africa.

Also named in the Kings squad are Saracens scrum-half Neil de Kock, former Sarries full back Brent Russell and current Harlequins Gary Botha and De Wet Barry plus London Irish prop Faan Rautenbach.

The match is the first for the new franchise and although the team have yet to be ratified by Kings officials, Catt will be guaranteed a "warm welcome" from many of his former team-mates and opponents if he plays.

Catt would join current Lions centre Riki Flutey and Munster lock Tom Reid in having played for and against the Lions. Flutey was in the Wellington team during the 2005 Lions tour of New Zealand while Reid was with the 1955 Lions and played against the 1959 side for Eastern Canada.

Boys on tour

* Players are two to a room which helps bonding but is a problem if your room-mate's a snorer. The Lions draw lots to see who they share with in each new location and Martyn Williams will be glad to be rid of Andrew Sheridan, the worst offender, now they're off to Bloemfontein.
