Hour of need: goalkeeper Joe Lewis played 15 minutes as a striker after the coach ran out of out-field substitutes

Nobody is 'too tired' for Stuart Pearce this time

09.06.09

Stuart Pearce is confident his European Under-21 Championship plans will not be wrecked by another spate of late withdrawals.

Two years ago, David Bentley was "too tired" to play and officials were unable to contact Gabriel Agbonlahor.

The present squad warmed up for Sweden with a 7-0 win over Azerbaijan in Milton Keynes last night, when goalkeeper Joe Lewis played 15 minutes as a striker after the coach ran out of out-field substitutes.

Pearce said: "They all want to be there and go. If anyone missed it through injury he would be crestfallen."

They sent a goalkeeper on as a striker. That is frankly insulting. What benefit did that give to the England side?
