Bowing out: Marat Safin is due to retire at the end of the season

Injury puts Marat Safin out of Queen's

Marat Safin could miss his farewell to Wimbledon after pulling out of the Aegon Championships at Queen's with a back injury.

The Russian seventh seed, who had been given a first-round bye, withdrew hours before his centre court clash with Xavier Malisse

Safin, 29, is due to retire at the end of the season and the two-time grand slam champion will hope he recovers in time to make his final appearance at Wimbledon, which starts on 22 June.

Anne Keothavong's preparations for SW19 suffered a blow today, when she crashed out of the AEGON Classic 6-1, 7-6 to India's Sania Mirza.

The British No1's opening-round victory on Monday was only her second at the Edgbaston grasscourt tournament and her first there since 2004.

Any hopes she would improve that record significantly this week ended against world No98 Mirza, who powered her way to victory in just under an hour and a half.

But there will be a Britain in the third round after 20-year-old Naomi Cavaday secured one of the best wins of her career.

The British No6, a wildcard entry from Kent, gained a 7-6, 2-6, 6-4 victory over veteran Tamarine Tanasugarn, of Thailand, a player 250 places higher in the world rankings. Cavaday won a break in the seventh game of the third set and went on to seal the match.
