Difficult journey: David Beckham paid tribute to the fans who managed to make it to Wembley

David Beckham hails goal ace Wayne Rooney

11 Jun 2009

David Beckham made a landmark 100th start for England last night and then paid tribute to Wayne Rooney and Fabio Capello for the transformation the team have made since losing against Croatia in Steve McClaren's final match in charge, in November 2007.

"Wayne has always performed well and is a threat to any side," said Beckham, who earned his 112th cap against Andorra.

"He has scored important goals for England and Manchester United and let's hope it continues. The manager and the management staff is at the heart of why it's going so well."

Beckham also paid tribute to the 57,897 fans who made the trip to Wembley despite the strike that disrupted the Underground network.

He said: "When we didn't qualify for the European Championships, that was a really disappointing time. But the fans showed us on a difficult night getting here what passion they have got for the team."

Beckham is refusing to rule out a return to the Premier League once his time on loan at AC Milan expires and he returns to Los Angeles Galaxy.

He said: "I'm going back to the Galaxy to finish the season and then in December I'll see where I go, whether that will be Milan or somewhere else. I'll wait and see."

what has beckham got to make him so special. All he has ever done was get the ball and play it long. If thats what it takes to be a footballer then I should have been one. No wonder why Brazil, spain, Italy , Argentina are World champs, because they dont worship players who all they do is play long balls. Kaka or Beckham?

I'll say it again - when we meet the World Cup big boys it'll be damp hankies and hard luck stories on the plane home. QED.
