Aussie raider set to have blast against sprint rivals

15 Jun 2009

Henry Candy's exciting young sprinter Amour Propre spearheads a British challenge in a truly global King's Stand Stakes).

As a three-year-old, the Palace House Stakes winner has less weight to carry than 11 of his 14 rivals in the five-furlong Group 1 dash.

And should he win the £300,000 race, it will be a real rags-to-riches story, since he cost his owners - including BBC presenter John Inverdale - just 1,600 guineas.

While he holds a favourite's chance, Amour Propre has a lot on his plate against seasoned international sprinters from Britain, Australia, America and South Africa.

Candy said: "I was surprised that he won quite so easily at Newmarket in the Palace House Stakes.

"But he has certainly been working in exciting fashion and he is starting to relax. I have been trying to teach him to settle in behind, so that he knows there is more than one way to get the job done."

But Candy's colt will face a proper test from Scenic Blast (nap), who is trained in Australia by Daniel Morton.

The five-year-old is attempting to add the British leg of the Global Sprint Challenge to his victory in the five-furlong Lightning Stakes at Flemington in January.

If he gets a good pace in front of him he can really quicken, as showed when winning over six at the same track in March.

Fleeting Spirit is also fancied to run well. She was a fine fourth in the Breeders' Cup Sprint for Jeremy Noseda at Santa Anita in October and though she hasn't run since she has been working well on the Newmarket gallops.

Tax Free is another danger. He is as consistent as they come and Dandy Nicholls's runners are bang in form. He merits strong each-way interest at around 10-1.
