Sandown plan: Mike De Kock says he is looking forward to the Coral-Eclipse at Sandown

Mike de Kock raider warms up for Eclipse

24 Jun 2009

Archipenko continued his build-up to a possible clash with Investec Derby fourth Rip Van Winkle in the Coral-Eclipse at Sandown, when stepping out on Newmarket's July racecourse.

Formerly trained by Aidan O'Brien, the son of Kingmambo is now in the care of South African handler Mike de Kock. The five-year-old looked in great heart as he worked with a stablemate over seven furlongs.

De Kock, who has returned to his homeland, said: "I was pleased with his work last week. We're looking forward to the Eclipse. He is still a fresh horse as we had a couple of months off with him because of a minor injury."

Archipenko is one of 15 horses currently based at the Abingdon House yard formerly used by Geoff Wragg.

De Kock was thought likely to expand his British stable. However, with a string of 170 horses in South Africa, it is unlikely that he will be a permanent fixture over here.

He said: "Newmarket is not a cheap. In fact, racing in England is the most expensive in the world."

Scenic Blast, who won the Group 1 King's Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot last week, is expected to work at Newmarket on Friday in preparation for the July Cup (10 July), along with Takeover Target.

The Joe Janiak-trained Takeover Target will be returning to the course for the first time since finishing two lengths behind Les Arcs in the 2006 renewal of the six-furlong sprint.

Meanwhile, dedicated TV horseracing channel Racing UK is to revert to a stand alone subscription service after broadcaster Setanta went into administration yesterday.
