Tresco: Vaughan demise sad

29 Jun 2009

Marcus Trescothick believes England will miss his fellow Ashes hero Michael Vaughan this summer.

Former England captain Vaughan is set to announce his retirement on Tuesday after failing to win back his place ahead of this summer's series against Australia.

Vaughan will be best remembered for his role in masterminding the 2005 success over the same opponents and Trescothick, who opened the batting in Vaughan's side four years ago, told Sky Sports News: "His experience within this year's Ashes side would have been really important."

He added: "Obviously we worked closely together for a couple of years and had a great time, culminating in us winning the Ashes.

"To work with him, experience him and talk to him was a key moment for all of us. It was great to have that relationship with him."

Vaughan stepped down as captain last summer but had hoped to retain his place as a batsman.

His form, however, has not warranted selection and he was omitted from the 16-man training squad named last week after scoring just 147 runs in seven County Championship innings for Yorkshire.

His decision to retire is expected to be made official at a press conference called by the England and Wales Cricket Board on Tuesday.

Vaughan scored 18 Test centuries and 5,719 runs in 52 matches after making his debut in Johannesburg in 1999.
