Ryan Moore's hopeful of eclipsing Sea The Stars

Champion jockey Ryan Moore says he's hopeful rather than confident that St Leger and Breeders' Cup Turf winner Conduit can beat Sea The Stars when he meets the dual Classic winner in the Coral-Eclipse at Sandown.

Sea The Stars, unbeaten since his debut in July last year, became the first horse in 20 years to win both the 2,000 Guineas and the Epsom Derby and takes on older opponents for the first time in the 10-furlong Group 1 feature.

And with a 10lb weight concession in his favour, bookmakers make John Oxx's Sea The Stars an odds-on favourite.

"We have to give weight away to a very classy horse, so you'd have to be hopeful rather than confident," said Moore. "Conduit is in good form and has been working well, though."

Conduit provided Sir Michael Stoute his first victory in the St Leger last October but if the four-year-old were to triumph in the Eclipse, it would give the trainer a sixth success in the race.

Narrowly beaten by the Luca Cumani-trained Cima De Triomphe - who re-opposes on 7lb worse terms - in the Brigadier Gerard Stakes on his seasonal return, Conduit will tackle the same course and distance on Saturday.

The fact that the colt has previously raced over longer trips does not worry his jockey, however.

Moore said: "I think he's possibly better over further, but we're hopeful. We'll find out on Saturday."

Coral: 10-11 Sea The Stars, 7-2 Conduit, 9-2 Rip Van Winkle, 8 Cima De Triomphe, 14 Archipenko, 16 Twice Over, 20 bar.
