Setting the pace: Martin Kaymer’s 62 equalled the course record

Pain means gain for leader Martin Kaymer

02.07.09

Martin Kaymer played through pain to fire a course record-equalling 62 in the first round of the French Open in Paris.

The German chipped in for an eagle at the long third and collected eight birdies to be nine under - three ahead of a group of four players, including England's John Bickerton.

Kaymer had problems with blisters coming into the event and said: "It's still hurting but I will survive."

Double Open champion Padraig Harrington continued to struggle as he ended one over alongside England's Ian Poulter.
