Ugo Monye ready to make the most of his shot at Lions redemption

Ugo Monye has vowed to right the wrongs of his Lions Test debut when he runs out for the final game of the series at Ellis Park in Johannesburg tomorrow.

The Harlequins winger played his way into Ian McGeechan's side for the series opener in Durban with a string of impressive performances in the warm-up games only to fluff his lines on the biggest stage of all.

Monye wasted two gilt-edged try-scoring opportunities as first Springbok centre Jean de Villiers pulled off a spectacular first-half tackle before full-back Frans Steyn halted him in his tracks with the line beckoning shortly after half-time.

Those failures cost the 26-year-old his place on the left wing for last weekend's Second Test in Pretoria.

But the devout Christian has been given a shot at redemption on his preferred right wing by Lions head coach McGeechan, who has named him in a much changed line-up for the final game of this gruelling tour.

With the series already gone following the ill-tempered defeat at Loftus Versfeld, the Lions only have pride left to play for and no one is keener to set the record straight than Monye.

"Last week was tough for me," he said. "To play in a Lions Test is really one of the high points of your career.

"I was so proud to have been there. But to go from that position to not starting within a few days is quite a tough pill to swallow. You do wonder if you will get another opportunity because there are a number of great wingers out here.

"Playing this game takes you to the highest peaks and then drags you down to the lowest troughs. You have only got to look at that Durban test match to see what sport is all about.

"I'm very fortunate to have another chance and I intend to take it with both hands."

Monye is not the only Lion in need of a big game tomorrow in order to restore a dented reputation.

London Wasps prop Phil Vickery is also recalled two weeks after his international career looked to have been brought to a shuddering halt by Tendai "Beast" Mtawarira in Durban.

The 33-year-old was scrummaged off the Kings Park turf by the 19-stone Springbok but injuries to Gethin Jenkins (cheekbone) and Adam Jones (shoulder) mean the Raging Bull will locks horns with the Beast again.

Lions scrum coach Graham Rowntree on Wednesday admitted it would be a "massive challenge" for Vickery to go head to head with Mtawarira but Joe Worsley, who replaces Tom Croft at blindside, has faith in his Wasps team-mate.

"I've known Phil for years and it's just an extra incentive for him to go out and play better," said Worsley. "It goes back to the whole pride thing. When your pride is wounded and things don't go the way you want to then you are just waiting to get that opportunity to do something about it.

"I know he's over the moon to get another chance to do that rather than stewing all summer.

"There are a lot of tough nuts out there but Phil is one of the toughest."

Riki Flutey gets his chance to start in a test alongside Tommy Bowe in a new-look midfield following injuries to Brian O'Driscoll (concussion) and Jamie Roberts (wrist).

The former Wasps star, who will play for French side Brive next season, has battled his way back from a tour- threatening knee injury to force his way into the Test side with some commanding midweek displays.

"We're here for one reason and that is to win a Test match for the Lions," said Flutey.

"I think we have earned quite a bit of respect and shown quite a lot of character to come back and win some of those midweek games.

"But all that hard work will go to waste and go down the drain if we don't put in a decent performance this weekend."

The largely Welsh and Irish team were the better side last week and performed heoically. The ref's bizarre failure to card Burger for blatant ete gouging cost us the result.Monye and Flutey amd Vickery are on;y in the team because the coaches are feeling sorry for them and their lamentable performances in the disastrous 1st Test

Good to see Phil Vickery in the team again as I like watching penalty kicks.

They're playing a British Lions team again? After we did so well with a Welsh and Irish Lions team last week? Why?

Decent thing to do by McGeechan to give Vickery and Monye another chance for Lions - hope they repay his trust.

Money will no doubt keep the Lions for another 4 years - but home nations should be more selfish in pro era and focus on strengthening and improving national teams and not a team that gets together for 3 tests every 4 years. Otherwise they will all stay in second and third divisions of world rugby.
