Mark Cavendish a green machine

Sprint king Mark Cavendish hailed his Columbia team-mates after the Briton surged to victory in stage two of the Tour de France.

The 24-year-old (left), who has now overtaken Chris Boardman as Britain's most successful cyclist with 42 career wins, said: “This team is superb. I had eight riders riding for me and I was just glad I could finish it off. It was perfect.”

Cavendish's fifth Tour stage win in 40-degree heat also saw him take the green jersey for the race's leading sprinter.

“Wearing the green jersey is one of the biggest achievements a sprinter can have,” he added. “It's a beautiful moment for me.
“An Englishman is the worst you can put in this heat. The green can cover my red body.”
