J J The Jet Plane
Grounded: J J The Jet Plane (right) struggled to make an impression from a poor draw at Royal Ascot last time out

It's time to strap yourself in as Jet is ready for take-off

He came to England with a lofty reputation but was left grounded by a poor draw in the Golden Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot.

But sit back and watch South Africa's star sprinter J J The Jet Plane cruise to victory in a cracking July Cup at Newmarket tomorrow.

Aside from the fact that trainer Mike de Kock has been a tremendous supporter of British racing over the years and deserves to gain a first Group 1 victory on these shores, his five-year-old clearly has the potential to cause an upset.

De Kock has long held the view that the gelding wants seven furlongs or perhaps a mile, but this stiff six furlongs might find out the Australian-trained hot favourite Scenic Blast, who was a brilliant winner of the five-furlong King's Strand Stakes at the Royal meeting.

J J The Jet Plane suffered only his second career defeat on turf in sprint races at Ascot, where he was too keen in a muddling contest won by Art Connoisseur, and should be staying on late and fast.

Michael Bell's three-year-old re-opposes but the biggest dangers to J J The Jet Plane according to the betting market would appear to be Scenic Blast and, if he takes his chance, Paco Boy, whose form is better over slightly further.

Don't rule out Jeremy Noseda's Fleeting Spirit, who was just half a length behind Scenic Blast. That was her first run of the season and for a horse who will improve for the effort and has solid form over further, she has good each-way claims.

There would be no better aptly-named winner on the card than Thousand Miles at 1.30, given that three-time champion jockey Richard Dunwoody is set to end his 1000-mile charity walk up the July Course before racing.

The ground may be a bit too lively for Peter Chapple-Hyam's strong-looking colt, however, and preference is for SOVEREIGN REMEDY, who should find the drop back to a mile right up his street. He possibly failed to stay 10-furlongs in a race won by Changing The Guard at York last time.

How nice it is to see Johnny Murtagh not banned for a big day's racing after missing the final two days of Royal Ascot and the Coral-Eclipse. The Irishman has a major chance of repaying the faith that trainer Aidan O'Brien puts in him by taking the Group 2 Superlative Stakes with EMPEROR CLAUDIUS nap (2.00).

The colt locks horns again with Richard Hannon's Big Audio, who short-headed him in the Chesham Stakes, but the hope is Emperor Claudius won't have such a troubled run that he got at Ascot when looking an unlucky loser.

There is a traditional turnout for the Bunbury Cup, featuring the six-furlong performers trying to stretch their stamina and the milers dropping back in distance.

But the lightly-raced CAPTAIN BRILLIANCE (2.35) created a very favourable impression when winning here over this seven-furlong trip last month and has the profile of being a Group-class horse in a handicap.

Milham's Newmarket TV tips

1.30 Sovereign Remedy; 2.00 Emperor Claudius; 2.35 Captain Brilliance; 3.10 J J The Jet Plane.
