Karl Burke in limbo as he targets Shanakill glory

As he waits for the verdict of a long-running investigation into corruption, Karl Burke confirmed that his stable star Lord Shanakill is on course for the Sussex Stakes at Goodwood.

The Yorkshire trainer has still to be told the judgement of the British Horseracing Authority following charges emanating from the collapsed race-fixing trial at the Old Bailey in 2007.

Any punishment could include disqualification or a heavy fine but, despite expecting the outcome from the BHA yesterday, Burke remains in limbo.

He said: "I've heard nothing. As soon as I know what is happening, I will be happy to talk about it and we will probably release a statement."

Burke revealed that Lord Shanakill, who gave him a first Group 1 victory in his 17-year training career when winning the Prix Jean Prat at Chantilly last time, is expected to run at Goodwood.

The three-year-old will renew rivalry with Aidan O'Brien's Mastercraftsman, who beat him narrowly in the St James's Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot, in the mile feature on 29 July.

"The Sussex Stakes looks a hot race, even for an English Group 1, but Lord Shanakill is on course for it," said Burke. "That's the plan. As long as the ground is good and he remains in good form, he'll go to Goodwood."

Meanwhile, the prognosis is good for Australian veteran Takeover Target, who broke a leg in the July Cup at Newmarket on Friday.

Trainer Joe Janiak said: "He's going to be at Newmarket's Equine Hospital for three months, then he'll be in quarantine, before we fly him home.

"It was touch and go until they discovered what was wrong (a broken cannon bone), but once they knew what it was, they did a first-class job. I'm happy that they saved him and that he's going to be okay."
