Ian Poulter hopes his homework pays off at Turnberry to land him his first major.

The Englishman finished second at Royal Birkdale last year but plans to go one better here after spending hours reading yardage books and studying footage of the course.

He said: "I'd never been to Turnberry. I turned up on Sunday at around 10pm. I never played as an amateur on these courses and I used to play 18, 27 or 36 holes to get used to the course.

"But I have spent time at home working on the visuals, the tee shots and the way the wind is going to be blowing. It's all about the lines in the yardage book. They have a little photograph on them, so you can work out the wind direction from there as well."
