Love match: Greg Norman and Chris Evert on the course

Wind power could be key for Greg Norman

Greg Norman says blustery conditions could help him to a fairytale victory at the course where he produced one of the finest rounds in Open history.

The 54-year-old's stunning second-round 63 over the Ailsa course in 1986 paved the way for the first of his two Open titles.

Last summer the Australian proved he could still be an Open contender when he took a twoshot lead into the final round at Royal Birkdale.

Newly married to tennis great Chris Evert, he finished third behind Padraig Harrington and Ian Poulter but is now ready for more heroics if the weather turns rough.

"Dead calm conditions will bring a lot more players into contention," he said. "I need a little bit of wind to help out."

That's when his experience could come into play. Norman said: "That's always a factor when you're not as physically strong and don't have the same endurance as someone in their 20s or 30s.

"Last year I used my experience very well in adverse conditions.

"If you get off to a nice, consistent start, you put yourself in a place where you might have a chance of winning. I don't see a 63 this week. You only have to venture out of the fairway nine or 10 feet and you might lose your ball, the rough is that thick."
