Bradley Wiggins remains on course for a podium finish after impressing again on a gruelling day in the Alps.

Before the 16th stage, race leader Alberto Contador had spoken of the need to increase his lead over the Londoner ahead of tomorrow's individual time trial.

The Spaniard did his best to capitalise on a break by the Schleck brothers but Wiggins was able to respond as seven-time winner Lance Armstrong was left trailing in their wake.

The Texan fought his way back and stays ahead of Wiggins in second place overall but if the 29-year-old survives today's five climbs, he seems certain to finish in the first three on Sunday.

"I felt strong," Wiggins said. "I keep telling myself it's hard for everybody and that I'm not the only one suffering. There's a lot of guys gone already and that's good for your morale, too."

Mikel Astarloza took the stage win, while Germany's Jens Voigt was taken to hospital with concussion and a broken cheekbone after a horrific crash at 50mph, which left him sliding along the road face down straddling his bike.
