Confident: Simeon Williamson thinks Usain Bolt can be beaten

I can beat Usain Bolt to reign at Crystal Palace, insists Simeon Williamson

Simeon Williamson says Usain Bolt can be beaten in their 100m showdown at the London Grand Prix.

Williamson, who clocked 10.05secs - the fastest British time this season - in beating Dwain Chambers in Birmingham two weeks ago, is set to go head-to-head with the Jamaican at Crystal Palace.

Bolt is also in ominous form, having cruised to victory at the Paris Golden League meeting last week, and has vowed to send a message to his rivals in south London.

But Williamson, 23, is refusing to be cowed by the prospect of squaring up to the world record holder.

He said: "Everyone's beatable. Nobody thought anyone would beat Asafa Powell after he broke the records but then Usain Bolt came along. If your mind's not there, you can be the fastest man in the world and you will still struggle.

"It just depends on what happens on the day. Guys like Bolt are setting the standards, so that spurs everyone else on. You need to be able to challenge these guys."

Williamson is in the form of his life as he prepares for next month's World Championships in Berlin. However, the Highgate Harrier is aware of the task facing him as he attempts to break the Jamaican-American sprint stranglehold held by Bolt, Powell and Tyson Gay.

He added: "I'm the fastest in Europe but that doesn't mean much on the world stage.

"I'm 21st in the world but I want to get better.

"I want to show that the consistency is there. In previous years, I have had been rubbish all season and then, when it came to trials and the championships, I would set personal bests.

"If I can perform well again at Crystal Palace, I will be peaking at Berlin."

The 100m is the climax to Friday's programme and tickets are still available for that night and the following day's action, when Britain's Olympic silver medallist Germaine Mason will compete in the high jump.
