Bradley Wiggins bids to close the gap on title rivals

23.07.09

Britain's Bradley Wiggins is looking to haul himself back into the podium positions on stage 18 of the Tour de France.

The Londoner dropped from third to sixth overall after being left for dead by his title rivals yesterday in the final day in the Alps.

A seventh-placed finish in Le Grand-Bornand left him nearly five minutes behind race leader and odds-on favourite Alberto Contador.

Wiggins is a strong time trialist, however, and he will hope to recover some lost ground in Annecy today.

Wiggins's Garmin team director Matt White said: “It's going to be an interesting one — this Tour is far from over. We hope to take time on a lot of people. How much, we will see.”

Yellow jersey wearer Contador extended his lead yesterday after finishing second, just behind winner Frank Schleck. The other Schleck brother, Andy, was third with the same time.

Contador's Astana team-mate Lance Armstrong dropped two places to fourth overall after coming in fifth, more than two minutes adrift.
