South Africa to accept Saracens match offer

Chris Jones

Saracens are lining up a lucrative mid-week clash with World champions South Africa, which could be played at either Stamford Bridge or Craven Cottage on 2 December.

The club are playing Northampton at Wembley on 12 September, but the national stadium is not available for the December date.

The Springboks were not due to play in England as their autumn tour takes in matches against France, Italy and Grand Slam champions Ireland but they have agreed to stop off in London before heading back home.

Sarries are hoping to increase their supporter base among the 750,000-strong South African community in the south east. The squad has a strong South African flavour under ex-Springbok centre Brendan Venter, and that contingent has increased with the signing of Derick Hougaard, the former Springbok outside half.

Fantastic.........do we never learn?

After years of playing on a crap surface at the bridge, the club have made great strides toward improving the pitch. So having invested thousands of pounds on the artificial lighting machinery and re-laying the pitch several times, are we now considering letting it get ripped to shreds for a rugby match and a few extra quid!

You've only got to look what happened to Wembley to realise what a ridiculous move this would be.

No offence to the 'egg-chasers', but I really hope this is played down by the thames instead.

We all know that saracens will become a South African club from September. They might as well just come out and admit it. Shame for the Premierdhip but money talks louder than anything these days
