Red-hot Sir Michael Stoute set to hit the target with Main Aim

27 Jul 2009

Main Aim can put backers on the path to a profitable week at Glorious Goodwood by landing the Betfair Cup (3.25), the highlight of the first day's action.

Fresh from his victory aboard Conduit in the King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes, Ryan Moore is a jockey at the height of his powers at present and is hot favourite to ride the most winners at the five-day meeting. This should be the first of them.

Goodwood's gradients will be a new test for Main Aim, who has done his racing around more orthodox tracks in the past.

But this seven-furlong trip looks to be ideal and Sir Michael Stoute's team could hardly be in better form, advertised by the stable's one-two-three in Saturday's King George.

On his latest start, Main Aim was one of the victims when Fleeting Spirit lost her sense of direction in the final stages of Newmarket's July Cup, but he still had an awful lot of very good horses behind when running on into second place.

Perhaps six furlongs isn't quite sufficient a test for him, but over a mile in the Queen Anne Stakes on his previous outing the extra distance just seemed to blunt Main Aim's pace as he could only plug on into fourth behind Paco Boy.

Being drawn widest in stall one tomorrow is not ideal and, for a horse who seems most effective ridden handily, it will force Moore to do some pushing from the start just to get a position.

However, Main Aim is a straightforward sort whose Group 1 form stacks up well in this contest. He holds J J The Jet Plane on their July Cup running.

Ouqba looks the danger on his Jersey Stakes victory, and some seriously good horses have won that race in recent years. But the jury is still out on the strength of this year's renewal and Ouqba may have been favoured by the draw in that race.

Masterofthehorse is a fascinating runner among the Ladbrokes St Leger hopefuls lining up in the Gordon Stakes at 2.45.

He looked a prime contender for the final Classic of the season when staying on into third in the Derby and, although he was some way behind Fame And Glory in the Ballydoyle pecking order, it was a surprise to see him sold to join little-known Newmarket trainer Debbie Mountain.

With Mark Johnston's team always to be respected at this meeting, it's unwise to write off Urban Poet's chances with stablemate Clientele having given the form of his debut win a boost yesterday. He makes appeal at decent odds.

William Haggas's Alfathaa was a major eye-catcher at Sandown last time having also looked a winner waiting to happen in the Royal Hunt Cup on his previous start. Upped to a mile and a quarter, he's a definite player in 2.10.

Recent Weatherbys Super Sprint winner Monsieur Chevalier won't be much of a price but Richard Hannon's colt will be very hard to beat in the Molecomb Stakes at 4.00.
