Resorts battle to top the 2012 sand castle

Matthew Beard, Olympics Editor

A battle of Britain's seaside resorts is about to begin to provide vast amounts of sand for the Olympic beach volleyball tournament in Horseguards Parade.

The 2012 organising committee, Locog, will shortly put out a tender for 5,000 square metres of sifted and filtered sand.

The arduous refinement process is needed to prevent sand from sticking between players' toes or from cuts being inflicted by errant pieces of seashell.

Locog stress, whichever seaside resort wins the tender, it will be an example of the possible benefits to areas beyond London of the 2012 Games.

Beautiful golden sands by the bucketful in the Principality of Morecambe.

Not sure about sending 5,000 square metres of our lovely sand all the way to London!
