Germaine Mason pulls out of World Championships

Evening Standard   5 Aug 2009

Olympic high jump silver medallist Germaine Mason today withdrew from the Great Britain team for this month's World Championships in Berlin.

The 26-year-old, who was an unexpected runner-up in Beijing last year, injured his ankle at last Friday's IAAF Super Grand Prix meeting in Stockholm.

A scan showed a significant ligament injury, ruling Mason out for the rest of the season.

"This is another blow to the team and the loss of Germaine is particularly disappointing," said UK Athletics head coach Charles van Commenee. "His was an injury sustained in competition, which is unfortunately an occupational hazard."

Toby Sandeman, the European Under23 200metres champion, has also pulled out of the championships which start on 15 August as a foot problem has limited his training.

Van Commenee added: "Toby has been receiving treatment for an ongoing foot problem and has been unable to train over the last couple of weeks and that is not ideal preparation for the World Championships."
