Top-class stayer Patkai has been ruled out for the remainder of the season.

Connections of the Sir Michael Stoute-trained four-year-old, who has not run since finishing second to Yeats in the Ascot Gold Cup in June, did not elaborate on the injury.

Peter Reynolds, racing manager to owners Ballymacoll Stud, said: "He's probably not going to run again this season. He's had a problem and Sir Michael is likely to wait and get him right in the spring. We hope he'll be in all the top staying races next season."

The news is another blow to the owners, who lost Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe hope Tartan Bearer for the season when he was found to be lame before the Juddmonte International at York last week.

But Reynolds added: "We had a disappointing York, but there is plenty to look forward to. We may have our first two-year-old runner of the season at Newmarket on Friday. She is called Fringe Success and and is pencilled in for a race over seven furlongs."
