Ground worry: Sea The Stars

Bookies cast doubt over Sea The Stars' Champion bid

Sea The Stars could miss the Irish Champion Stakes at Leopardstown a week on Saturday if the bookmakers are correct.

John Oxx's brilliant winner of the 2,000 Guineas and Epsom Derby earned his fourth Group 1 success of the season in the Juddmonte International at York last week, following up victory in the Eclipse.

But William Hill and Paddy Power, who were both offering odds on the race yesterday morning, suspended betting last night amid growing concerns that the colt will not line up in the 10-furlong Group 1 because the ground may be unsuitably soft.

Meetings have been abandoned in Ireland because of waterlogging in the past few days, although the going at Leopardstown was reportedly good ahead of what would almost certainly be Sea The Stars's last race in front of his home crowd.

Though he holds entries in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp and Newmarket's Champion Stakes, soft ground may also be against him there.

The three-year-old's final run before he is surely packed off to stud, seems likely to be in the Breeders' Cup Classic at Santa Anita in November.

Meanwhile, Delegator, runner-up in the 2,000 Guineas and St James's Palace Stakes, is ready to make his debut for Godolphin in the Totesport Celebration Mile at Goodwood on Saturday.

The colt is one of nine entries for the Group 2 contest, who include the Sir Michael Stoute-trained Zacinto - an easy winner of his maiden as a juvenile and an early favourite for this season's Guineas until injury intervened.

Delegator, a purchase out of the Brian Meehan yard, was recently partnered by Frankie Dettori in a piece of work and Godolphin racing manager Simon Crisford said: "We've been fairly quiet with him but he's ready to run."
