Laura Robson passes first hurdle in New York

Britain's Laura Robson goes into today's US Open qualifier full of confidence having already pulled off one shock victory at Flushing Meadows.

The 15-year-old, ranked 460 in the world, faces Aniko Kapros in the second qualifying round and although the Hungarian is 207 places further up the rankings, Robson showed she can bridge the gap by beating world No128 Stephanie Foretz 7-5, 6-1 in her opening match in New York.

Robson had overcame nerves to beat Foretz and admitted: "In the beginning I was a bit overwhelmed but I soon got into the match. I started to feel more comfortable and I realised that I could do it."

Should last year's junior Wimbledon champion beat Kapros she will only need to win one more match to make the main draw.

Elena Baltacha is also on course after beating Argentina's Betina Jozami 6-1, 6-1.

The British No2: "I'm really pleased to have lost just a couple of games. Now I really think that I can push on."
