Hard task: Andy Murray has a tough route to the US Open final

Two huge obstacles between Andy Murray and his first slam title

28.08.09

Andy Murray faces the daunting task of having to beat Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal to win a first grand slam title at the US Open, which starts in New York on Monday.

Murray is a former US Open boys' champion and reached the final last year, when he lost to Federer. As the No2 seed, he is scheduled to repeat that contest on the final day of the last slam of the year.

Nadal is due to be his semi-final opponent but, with the former world No1 still battling back from knee problems, there is no guarantee the Spaniard will last that long on the unforgiving hard courts of Flushing Meadows.

In the first round, Murray meets Ernests Gulbis, who lost in straight sets to the British No1 at Wimbledon.
