Higham boost for Warrington

29 Aug 2009

England hooker Mickey Higham will make his comeback from a three-month injury lay-off and little-known Tyrone McCarthy will make only his third senior appearance for Warrington in Saturday's Carnegie Challenge Cup final against Huddersfield.

The selection of Higham, who takes the place of ankle-injury victim Jon Clarke, was revealed by Wolves coach Tony Smith at Friday's traditional pre-Wembley walkabout.

Higham will be on the bench, alongside the 21-year-old McCarthy, who did not make his Super League debut until two weeks ago, but got the nod ahead of veteran prop Paul Rauhihi, who has a slight back injury, and fellow novices Lee Mitchell and Matty Blythe.

Higham, 28, has been out since suffering ruptured biceps in the Wolves' win at Castleford in May but gets the chance to make up for the disappointment he suffered in 2004, when he missed St Helens' Cup final win against Wigan in Cardiff with a stress fracture of his foot.

"Medically he's been passed it," said Smith. "Obviously he hasn't played for a little while but, when we lost Jon Clarke, it was too much of a temptation.

"He's a really good professional who keeps himself extremely fit, so we don't think it's too much of a risk. We think Mickey will get out there and do a great job."

Australian Matt King and Chris Hicks are fit to take their places in the three-quarter line, with Vinnie Anderson chosen to start for the first time this season at stand-off.

Team: Mathers; Riley, King, Bridge, Hicks; V Anderson, Briers; Morley, Monaghan, Carvell, L Anderson, Westwood, Harrison. Subs: Cooper, Johnson, Higham, McCarthy.
