Andy Murray’s ready for Cup treble, insists David Lloyd

2 Sep 2009

John Lloyd has insisted Andy Murray is happy to play three Davis Cup rubbers in a bid to help Great Britain avoid relegation from the Euro/Africa Group One zone against Poland at the end of September.

World No2 Murray is trying to win his first Grand Slam at the US Open, where captain Lloyd announced an initial six-man squad that doesn't feature any other British men's player inside the world's top 200.

The team for the tie in Liverpool from 18-20 September is completed by Ross Hutchins, Ken Skupski, James Ward, Josh Goodall and Dan Evans.

That puts enormous pressure on Murray because he must shoulder much of the burden against a Polish team who, in Mariusz Fyrstenberg and Marcin Matkowski, boast one of the best doubles partnerships in tennis.

Lloyd said: “Andy has to play three matches and knows that. He is ready to play and this kind of thing happens when you are the No1 player but he is one of the — if not the — fittest guys on the tour and has been very positive about this tie when we have talked in North America.

“It's not an ideal situation but it is his job. Andy wants to ensure we avoid relegation and is eager to play.”
