Roger Federer moved into his 22nd successive grand slam semi-final, but had to dig deep to defeat Swedish 12th seed Robin Soderling 6-0, 6-3, 6-7, 7-6 on centre court to stay on course for a sixth US Open title in a row.

Federer extended his amazing career domination over Soderling to 12-0 — they also met in the French Open final this year — and will now face Novak Djokovic, who was a 7-6, 1-6, 7-5, 6-2 winner over Fernando Verdasco.

Federer said: “It's a great relief to come through this one. It was a bit too easy in the beginning and then he got into the match as it got even cooler out there and he is from Sweden so he must have liked it!

“Making 22 semi-finals in a row is one of the greatest records in my career. Now I face Novak again and it will be a tough match.”

Caroline Wozniacki ended the unseeded Melanie Oudin's amazing run at the US Open to claim a semi-final place with a 6-2, 6-2 win over the 17-year-old who made 43 unforced errors in 88 minutes. Wozniacki, the No9 seed, now faces Belgium's Yanina Wickmayer.

Wickmayer, ranked 50th in the world, had not previously got past the second round of a slam event but she reached the last four with a 7-5, 6-4 win over Ukraine's Kateryna Bondarenko.

Britain's Heather Watson, the 11th seed, moved into the last 16 of the US Open girl's tournament with an impressive 6-3, 6-2 win over American Courtney Dolehide and now meets Germany's Annika Beck.
