Chris Wood finds going sweet in Cologne
10 Sep 2009On a course that has seen rounds of 60 and 61 in the past, England's Chris Wood again showed what was possible in Cologne today.
The 21-year-old, fifth in The Open as an amateur last year and third at Turnberry in July, began the Mercedes-Benz Championship at Gut Larchenhof with a six-under-par 66.
It gave Wood an early one-shot clubhouse lead over South African James Kingston and Australian Scott Strange in the elite 78-man event.
The 6ft 5in Bristol golfer was only two under at the turn but then had a hat-trick of birdies from the 11th and added another on the long 15th.
"I felt completely in control," said Wood, who is still in his first full season on the European Tour. "I sort of feel I've settled into it."
