Harlequins beckon after Tony Copsey quits Wasps

Tony Copsey is to quit as chief executive of London Wasps in the coming weeks, fuelling speculation he could replace under-pressure Mark Evans in the same role at beleaguered Guinness Premiership rivals Harlequins.

Wasps today announced they would be looking to review their management structure following Copsey's decision to stand down from his post this autumn after two years at the club.

Copsey, a former Wales lock, declared in a statement released by Wasps this morning that he had reached a "crossroads", adding that it was "a natural time to depart ready for my next challenge".

Coming, though, at a time when the future of Evans is shrouded in doubt in the wake of the Bloodgate scandal that has rocked not only Harlequins but the rugby world, suspicions will certainly be raised by today's announcement.

Copsey joined Wasps in August 2007 from Harlequins, where he held the position of managing director.

He successfully worked alongside Evans at that time to bring crowds flooding back to the Stoop but he may now return as his former colleague's replacement.

Evans is under serious pressure to resign because of Bloodgate and the subsequent cover-up, events which have dominated the headlines throughout the summer.

He will discover by the end of the week if he is to face any further action from the Rugby Football Union following allegations the club tried to cover up the full truth of the saga, which came about after Quins attempted to fake a blood substitution in last season's fateful Heineken Cup quarter-final against Leinster in April.

Whether he goes the same way as ex-Quins director of rugby Dean Richards and the club's former chairman Charles Jillings, both of whom resigned as a result of Bloodgate, remains to be seen.

Copsey, given his track record, would be the ideal successor to Evans.

Wasps today hailed Copsey for overseeing the "seamless" transition of the club's ownership structure.

Businessman Steve Hayes is now in charge, with a new-look board including executive chairman Mark Rigby and director Lawrence Dallaglio, the former Wasps and England captain.

This photo should serve as a warning to anyone in the public eye not to wear a jacket that is less than 100% wool. Nice tie though.
