Redmond gets the call after Ryder blow

28.09.09

Aaron Redmond, who has yet to play a one-day international, has been called up by New Zealand for the Champions Trophy in place of the injured Jesse Ryder.

The ICC have given New Zealand permission to make the change after Ryder suffered a groin injury while batting in the 38-run win over Sri Lanka yesterday and was subsequently ruled out for the remainder of the tournament.

"He's had this injury for a long time," said captain Daniel Vettori. "It repaired itself but he has now damaged it again.

"It's very sad for him." Redmond, a top-order batsman who can bowl leg spin, could now play in New Zealand's final group game against England in Johannesburg tomorrow when victory would secure the Black Caps a place in the semi-finals.

"Our fate is in our hands and we know the Wanderers wicket where the game will be played," said Vettori.

New Zealand have already made a change to their squad due to injury after all-rounder Jacob Oram strained a hamstring and was replaced by James Franklin.
