2016 Olympic host nation set to be unveiled

2 Oct 2009

The next city to host the Olympics after London 2012 will be announced today.

Madrid, Rio de Janeiro, Chicago and Tokyo are vying to land the sporting extravaganza in 2016.
The decision will be announced by International Olympic Committee (IOC) president Jacques Rogge in Copenhagen later.

Chicago is favourite to land the games, with its odds bolstered after US president Barack Obama flew in to the Danish capital to help with the final bid presentation.

Rio is also seen to be in the running, as the Olympics have yet to be held in South America.
Madrid - which was one of the cities that lost out to London four years ago - may struggle to win the vote as it would be the second European city in a row to host the Games.

Tokyo's chances may also suffer due to the fact that neighbouring capital Beijing was last year's host.

IOC delegates will make their picks during the day, with the city receiving the fewest votes eliminated round-by-round until one candidate secures a majority.

Mr Rogge said he thought the bidding process would be "very close".

"This is a trend we have seen in the last five to six years.

"Security - not only physical but also in terms of the organisation - is very important. We need a very good Olympic Village, state-of-the art venues, a good transportation system.

"If beyond that we can have a very good home team and a very warm public, the game is almost over."

British IOC member Craig Reedie added that the vote would be a "very, very close race between four outstanding bids".

He said: "Because the bids are so good and because it is so close the last few hours are going to be even more exciting than usual."
