Major boost: Lachlan Mitchell’s injury is far less serious than was first feared

Wasps allay Danny Cipriani and Lachlan Mitchell injury fears

London Wasps have announced that the injuries suffered by Lachlan Mitchell and Danny Cipriani in the win over Northampton are not as bad as first feared.

Although Mitchell was taken to Stoke Mandeville Hospital after injuring his neck, the full-back has suffered only mild concussion.

Cipriani was forced off with a knee problem in Sunday's match but it has been decided the fly-half does not need a scan and he is now working with the physios in the hope he can face Racing Metro in the Amlin Challenge Cup.

Mitchell's chances of taking part in Sunday's European tie at Adams Park are slimmer as, having suffered concussion, he must pass a series of tests before playing again.

In a statement Wasps said: “Lachlan will follow the strict five-day protocol before returning to play.

“Danny is undergoing acute injury management on his knee. He will be reviewed over the next two days to determine his availability for selection.”

The news is a boost for Wasps as their captain Tom Rees is expected to undergo further shoulder surgery that will keep him out of action until the new year, leaving him little time to impress before the start of the Six Nations.

The England flanker has been sidelined since he was injured in the match against Bristol in April.

After an initial operation it was hoped he would be playing again this month but the injury has not healed during his rehabilitation.

That setback has resulted in Rees seeking further medical advice and Wasps are expected to announce tomorrow that the 25-year-old will have surgery again.

England's first match of the 2010 Six Nations is against Wales at Twickenham on 6 February and Rees will be anxious to recover in time for that having missed last season's Championship due to a knee injury.
