China fatigue takes its toll on Maria Sharapova
7 Oct 2009A tired-looking Maria Sharapova was knocked out of the China Open by home favourite Peng Shuai 6-2, 6-4 in the third round today.
The Russian, who last week claimed her first title triumph since returning from a shoulder injury, had to come from 5-2 down in the third set to beat Victoria Azarenka in over three hours yesterday. But there was no fightback from the three-time grand slam champion against the world No53.
Sharapova said: "I've had matches where I didn't feel like I was maybe at the level that I wanted to be but I was able to fight through that and get through it, and today was just not one of those days, unfortunately."
