Frustration: Andy Murray will miss trip to China due to a wrist injury

Injured Andy Murray is forced to pull out of Shanghai Masters

8 Oct 2009

Andy Murray has withdrawn from next week's Shanghai Masters as he continues his recovery from a wrist injury.

The world No3 has not played since aggravating the problem in Great Britain's Davis Cup defeat by Poland three weeks ago.

A statement on Murray's website read: "Due to medical advice Andy will not be travelling to China.

"He has decided to give his wrist extra time to recover and is likely to return for the Valencia Open."

That tournament begins on 2 November, three weeks before the Briton will compete in the end-of-season ATP World Tour Finals in London.

Murray is the second big name to pull out of the Shanghai Masters as world No1 Roger Federer will miss the event due to fatigue.

Meanwhile, US Open girls' champion Heather Watson beat second seed Mel South 7-6, 6-2 at the ITF event in Barnstaple.

Watson, 17, at No681, is 539 places below her fellow Briton in the world rankings but put in an impressive display to set up a match against France's Kristina Mladenovic, the Junior French Open champion.
