Degree of success: Nathan Cleverly defends his British and Commonwealth titles

Maths star Nathan Cleverly’s a bright prospect

Gaining a degree in pure mathematics could lead to a potentially lucrative career in high finance. But even if Nathan Cleverly graduates next year he hopes to make his fortune from a very different source — as a world champion boxer.

Although education remains important to Cleverly, the 22-year-old has decided his future lies in the ring rather than in an office.

Unbeaten in 17 professional fights, the Welshman defends his British and Commonwealth light-heavyweight titles against Enfield-born Courtney Fry at York Hall in Bethnal Green tonight. If he comes through that test, against a former Commonwealth Games gold medallist, promoter Frank Warren has promised him a shot at the vacant European title in December.

By then, Cleverly should be engrossed in revising for the maths degree he will take at Cardiff University next May. And if he graduates, he believes his work in the ring will have played an important part.

After all, boxing has always required discipline and dedication, and Cleverly said: “That seemed to rub off. I love the combination of academia and sport.”

In his early teens Cleverly shared the same Newbridge gym as Joe Calzaghe and would later spar with the former undefeated world champion. He recalled: “I noted Joe's will to win. Now I'm winning, too. I'm enjoying my boxing. Actually, I'm loving my boxing.”

Cleverly outpointed former Lonsdale Belt holder Tony Oakey for the Commonwealth title in only his 12th professional contest and ended Danny McIntosh's unbeaten record last time out.

Vince Cleverly, Nathan's father and trainer, said: “He's a very good kid, always has been. He's always loved his schooling and loved keeping fit. But whatever success he's had is down to hard work and Nathan's not afraid of hard work.”

It is just as well. Cleverly Jnr added: “I've got three exams coming up in January and three more in May. Provided I pass those with flying colours I'll get my cap and gown.

“It's always difficult around boxing time, especially when I'm training for a fight. And now I have the extra responsibilities of defending my titles and hopefully going for the European championship. I thrive on the pressure.”
