Sergio Garcia still on target to break 2009 duck

9 Oct 2009

Sergio Garcia wasted no time closing in on fellow Spaniard Manuel Quiros when the Madrid Masters resumed today.

Despite starting with a 64 Garcia was two behind the shock leader when he teed off again, but he birdied the long 10th at Centro Nacional and then joined Quiros on 10 under par by picking up another shot on the 360-yard 13th.

An amazing 1,068 world ranking places separated the top two, but as Quiros, not even a member of the European Tour and playing thanks to his Spanish Order of Merit position, started his second round with two pars Garcia bogeyed the short 14th.

Londoner Anthony Wall, returning to action despite four trapped nerves in and around his left shoulder, moved up to third place on eight under with birdies at the 12th and 15th.

Alongside him was compatriot Lee Slattery, who covered the first 10 holes in four under to boost his hopes of moving up from 128th on the Tour money list into the top 115 who keep their cards for next season.

Essex's 21-year-old Oliver Fisher, in even greater need of a big cheque at 152nd on the standings, suffered a setback, however.

Second with Garcia when he followed his opening 65 with a four on the 10th, Fisher then double-bogeyed the 464-yard 16th and instantly dropped to joint sixth.
