Flying high: Sam Tomkins was outstanding for England

Sam Tomkins hopes he’s secured his place

19 Oct 2009

England hat-trick hero Sam Tomkins is hoping his heroics in Wales will be enough to secure him a role in the Gillette Four Nations series.

The 20-year-old Wigan half-back capped a tremendous debut season in Super League by taking the man-of-the-match award in England's 48-12 win over Wales in Saturday's warm-up fixture.

It was a delicious first taste of the big time for Tomkins, who had his appetite whetted for international rugby league.

Coach Tony Smith's squad will be boosted today by the arrival in camp of the nine-strong Leeds and St Helens contingent as England prepare for Friday's Four Nations opener against France and Tomkins is keeping his fingers crossed that he can keep his place in the face of the stiffer competition.

"I was very proud to be given the chance to play for my country and would love to do it all again," he said.

"I don't pick the team - that's Tony Smith's job - but I'm sure he'll select sides he feels can win all our Gillette Four Nations games.

"Hopefully, I'll be part of his plans and I'm going to keep working hard to make it tough for him to leave me out."

Tomkins believes England laid a solid foundation for a successful Four Nations with their nine-try victory in Bridgend.

"There is plenty to work on and we know we will have to improve but I think that was a very promising start for us," said the recently-crowned Super League Young Player of the Year.

"We'll be a lot better against France on Friday night and better still against the Aussies and Kiwis later on in the tournament."

While England emerged injury-free from their warm-up match, France coach Bobbie Goulding is wrestling with a number of injury concerns ahead of Friday's game at Doncaster's Keepmoat Stadium.

Winger Cyril Stacul (ankle) and scrum half Maxime Greseque (hamstring) are the latest concerns and there are also doubts over second rower Cyril Gossard (knee) and centre Jean-Philippe Baile (groin).

The injury blows follow the decision of Australian-qualified player Casey McGuire and Adam Mogg to decline their selections and have forced the French management to draft in Lezignan winger Nicolas Piquemal and scrum half James Wynne.
