Split decision: Carl Froch could have to travel to Copenhagen

Carl Froch may lose his home advantage

19 Oct 2009

Promoter Mick Hennessy is set to turn his attention to deciding on a location for Carl Froch's blockbuster Super Six showdown with fellow world champion Mikkel Kessler - but admits the Englishman may have to go to his rival's backyard.

WBC super-middleweight champion Froch enjoyed the raucous support of 8,000 people in Nottingham on Saturday as he beat American Andre Dirrell via a split decision in his opening bout of the six-man tournament, retaining his title in the process.

Next up in the Super Six Boxing Classic is a clash with Denmark's WBA champion Kessler, the other world title holder in the tournament.

While Saturday's Trent FM Arena promotion was a big success, Hennessy admits the fight may end up being in Copenhagen.

He said: "We'll begin talks now but we have an agreement with Sauerland Events (Kessler's promoters) that wherever it makes commercial sense and wherever we're going to get the biggest gate - whether it's Copenhagen or Nottingham - is where it will be."

After the narrow victory over a negative Dirrell at the weekend, Froch - now 26-0(20KOs) - believes his next fight against Kessler will be far more exciting.

The Dane meets American Andre Ward in the United States next month before meeting Froch in their second Super Six fight.

"I think when we beat Kessler we'll get the accolades," he said. "He's next and that's one to look forward to.

"Kessler boxes a bit and is a good mover but he'll stand there and fight rather than hold and moan. I'll do what I have to do, if I'm struggling to box early on then I'll put it on him and stand and have a trade-off but we'll see.

"I do think Kessler will win a close decision, travelling to America to face Ward. I'd like him to win and when we meet it will be for the undisputed title, which is what I've craved since turning professional."
