Andy Murray made a remarkable return after six weeks out with a wrist injury by defeating world No 23 Mikhail Youznhy 6-3, 6-2 to win the Valencia tournament yesterday.

It was his sixth tournament win of the season and the Briton will go for a seventh in Paris this week before heading to London for the tour finals which involve the top eight players in the sport at the O2 Arena.

Murray said: “I honestly did not have high expectations but it turned into a very, very good week for me. It is rare for someone to win a tournament straight away after such a long break and I'm happy that I managed to come back from injury so well. I was hitting the ball better as the week went on.”

Murray has a tough opening match in the Paris Masters event, taking on James Blake, the American, in a repeat of the final of the AEGON Championships at Queen's earlier this year.

Elsewhere, Roger Federer lost 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 to Novak Djokovic in the Swiss Indoors final in Basle.
