Swann: Strauss absence not an issue

10 Nov 2009

Graeme Swann is certain the absence of captain Andrew Strauss from England's tour to South Africa over the next week will not hamper the tourists' progress.

The captain has been instrumental as England have made an outstanding start to the two-and-a-half-month trip with comprehensive back-to-back wins over the Diamond Eagles, by 185 runs, and an eight-wicket triumph against the Warriors.

Strauss will be a spectator over the next six days when his side play three Twenty20 games after opting not to play the shortest form of the game leaving Paul Collingwood in charge, and Swann said: "Obviously it is different when you've got a different guy in charge, but we've all played with Colly in Twenty20s before, we all know what to expect."

He added: "I don't think it will alter things that greatly. In Twenty20, it's a bit helter-skelter anyway.

"The captain's job is more to just make sure everyone's in place on time to get through, so that we're not slow on the overate.

"So we'll all be trying to help him out in that regard."

England have struggled in limited-overs cricket in recent years, but Swann is hoping new tactics and being more bold will play out in their favour.

He added: "We've realised that whatever we've been trying for the last five years hasn't really been working and hasn't been consistent, so we've got to do something about it.

"It's a young vibrant squad and everyone there knows they're going to play with that freedom and aggression. Hopefully that's going to carry on into the full internationals.

"We all want to play in successful team rather than one that's just limping along."
